Slovenian railways: cheap train tickets



Slovenian railways offer cheap travel alternative and are well connected with other European countries. Although you won't pay much even for regular fares it is possible to travel even cheaper. Slovenian railways offer a series of discounts but many people don't even know they exist so...

...here they are!

Discounts for ICS and other trains

20% discount:

For groups of 6 or more passengers (does not apply to peak-time trains: ICS11, ICS12, ICS19 and ICS20 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).

30% discount:

Young passengers aged between 12 and 26 years with a EURO<26 travel card (obtainable on trains and major train stations like Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje and Koper).
Tourist weekend offer – return ticket on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays.

50% discount:

Children aged between 6 and 12 years.

Railplus card

Slovenian railways also offer 25% discount for one way and return international tickets (e.g. Maribor to Vienna) with the following participating countries and validity:

Shipping companies ATTIC and HML Discounts apply to all passengers using sea transport between Italy and Greece on the routes:

Ancona (Italy)-Igoumenitsa (Greece)-Patras (Greece) and
Bari (Italy)-Igoumenitsa (Greece)-Patras (Greece)

TCV tickets

For international tickets, a special international tariff is used to obtain prices. A surcharge has to be paid for certain trains (for instance, for ICE trains) or specific market prices apply to them (e.g. TGV, Thalys and other trains). Please consult Slovenian railways information offices at all major train stations for further details.

Discounts

For travel to Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, ticket prices are 30% lower than those in international transport. There is an additional 20% discount for return journeys to Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Validity

Ordinary tickets are valid for 2 months.

B.I.J. international tickets

25 to 40% discount applies to the B.I.J. tickets that are meant for young people up to 26 years of age traveling in the 2nd class to the following European countries:

Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland.

The tickets are available at all major train stations in Slovenia and are valid for two months.

City Star International

The City Star International tickets are flat-rate type tickets for individuals’ and groups’ return journeys from Slovenia to a foreign destination. The return journeys must start on Sundays. This special limitation does not apply to Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Greece. Validity: 1 month

Destinations

The tickets are used for travel from Slovenia to Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia or Greece.

Discounts

Individuals and groups of up to 5 passengers traveling to Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Greece can expect the following discounts:

  • full price for the first passenger

  • other passengers in a group receive 50% discount

  • for children: 75% discount

For the return journeys of individuals and groups to Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Croatia, the following discounts apply to groups of up to 5 passengers:

  • full price for the first passenger

  • other passengers in a group: 50% discount

  • free travel for children accompanied by parents or grandparents.

Regio AS

Destinations

Applies to return journeys in 2nd class of all trains to the following Austrian cities: Villach, Klagenfurt or Graz. Validity: 6 days.

Discounts

The holders of the EURO<26 card receive an additional discount.

Children up to 15 years of age receive a discount of 50%.

Flat-rate prices also apply to weekly and monthly tickets, and tickets for the transporting of bicycles.

Global Price tickets, Thalys trains, InterRail tickets (For more information, please ask at information desks of all major train stations in Slovenia).

These discounts can vary so we advise you to talk to Slovenian railways representatives at all major train stations in Slovenia before any other arrangements.
