Local events in Maribor

Although rather small, Maribor is pretty well known for its local events. Perhaps the main reason is that these are often world-class events attracting groups, theaters and authors from all over the world. We quite often end up accidentally attending a marvelous concert in one of Maribor's pubs. In fact, I frequently have absolutely brilliant experience with unplanned "accidental" events.

Jazz club Satchmo

Maribor's first jazz club and one of the first pub-style venues offers plenty of events and top international music performances. My husband Milan used to be their regular customer when he was a student at the University of Maribor. We live in England now but that still doesn't stop us from attending their concerts during our holidays in Slovenia.

KGB

Kulturno Glasbeni Brlog (Cultural and Musical Den) is a well known pub-style events hub in Maribor. It regularly hosts musicians, theater performances and stand up comedians. I have been there many times and the one thing that strikes me most is its relaxed atmosphere.

Opening times:

Monday - Thursday: 7pm - 2am

Friday, Saturday: 7pm - 3am

Sunday: closed

Multi-media center KIBLA

This is by far the most active multi-media center in Slovenia and one of the few of its kind in the world. It is actually a complex mix of creative groups that organize festivals, visiting lectures, concerts, reading sessions and numerous other events. They host a multi-media lab and a wonderful small secondhand bookshop. Kibla is housed in Narodni dom Maribor.

Narodni dom Maribor

Narodni dom Maribor is a cultural and event center which organizes musical and theater performances and many festivals including a very well known International Festival Lent.

Restaurant Rozmarin

Rozmarin hosts a top restaurant, a wonderfully chic wine cellar, a cafe and so on but they also organize a number of events. In my humble opinion Rozmarin is what restaurants should really be about - fusing with the local community and offering visitors a variety of food and wine inspired local events.

National Liberation Museum

This is a small regional museum but their staff are full of enthusiasm organizing many local events and exhibitions for visitors, pupils and students. Their latest project is a very neatly prepared Olympic exhibition (e.g. Slovenian Olympic medals, sports equipment, dresses, etc.).

Maribor Art Gallery

The gallery is one of the most important institutions in Maribor and their curators have organized some impressive exhibitions and events. For us it's a must when we visit Maribor. Many of the most admired local events are organized by the gallery and they regularly host exhibitions of Slovenian and internationally renowned artists.

Maribor City Castle

Maribor castle is a great architectural monument in the heart of the city and a great tourist spot for locals and visitors.

The Regional Museum which is housed in the castle contains archaeological, ethnographic, clothing, cultural and historical collections. Maribor castle is also a place for many permanent and temporary exhibitions and events.

STUK

Well, STUK is actually a student union, established and run by students of the University of Maribor. It's the place where many youngsters spend a good proportion of their time. Why? STUK hosts many concerts, parties and other local and international events with performers from all over the world. It is in fact one of the main party hubs in the city.

Festival Lent MARIBOR 25.6. -10.7.2010

Lent Festival is Maribor's crown jewel and is officially recognized as one of the top 50 local festivities in Europe. More than 400 performances and half a million of visitors make festival known across the world. This multicultural festival with many renowned Slovene and foreign performers offers:

Klub MC - Pekarna

Pekarna is a club with the kind of a rebellious youth flavor that every youngster should have visited at least once in a lifetime. It all looks a bit psychedelic and chaotic yet their eagerness and passion reveals a great deal of organization skills and professionalism.

I always feel liberated from the uniformity of life there and their concerts stay in your memory as sweet remembrance of colorful Woodstock-style concerts and parties. Wonderful experience that shouldn't be missed if you happen to be in Maribor.
